South Orange County, CA – The South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) proudly announces the swearing-in of Blake Leonard as the 2025–2026 Student Trustee. Leonard took the oath of office at the May 19 Board of Trustees meeting, administered by Board President Carolyn Inmon.
A political science major with a minor in international relations at Saddleback College, Leonard brings a unique blend of service, leadership, and commitment to community to his new role. A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran with seven years of active-duty service, Leonard currently serves on the cabinet of the Saddleback College Veterans Club. He was inspired to pursue the Student Trustee position following a life-changing trip to Washington, D.C., where fellow veterans informed him that no veteran had ever held the seat.
“The Marine Corps taught me to leave every place better than I found it,” said Leonard. “This is an incredible opportunity to serve my community, advocate for my fellow students, and help shape a stronger future for all.”
Leonard’s goals as Student Trustee reflect his dedication to empowerment, mentorship, and leadership development. His priorities for the year include:
- Fostering a Student Culture of Confidence and Growth: Creating an environment where students feel equipped and encouraged to pursue their goals—whether in higher education, the workforce, or entrepreneurship.
- Developing Future Leaders: Empowering students to lead by example and build on their experiences at Saddleback College to impact their communities and the world.
- Building a Campus Community of Support and Mentorship: Strengthening relationships between students and faculty through collaboration, shared experience, and mentorship. “It takes a village,” Leonard says, “and Saddleback is filled with people who have the knowledge and passion to guide the next generation.”
As Student Trustee, Leonard will serve as the voice of students on the Board of Trustees, representing the interests of both Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College.
“Blake brings a strong sense of service, discipline, and heart to this role,” said Chancellor Julianna M. Asperin Barnes. “We look forward to the leadership and insight he will bring to the Board and to the student communities he represents.”
