Retiring Deputy Chancellor

• President Donald P. Wagner congratulated Trustee Williams on his reelection as the OC Public Administrator-Public Guardian. He expressed appreciation to Deputy Chancellor Poertner for his service to the district. He thanked his trustee colleagues, the SOCCCD community and the wider community for their support and kindness to him and his family since the death of his son.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg attended a recognition event for the SC Veterans Memorial by the City of Mission Viejo. Mission Viejo was the first city to make a donation which started a snowball effect in subsequent donations. She congratulated trustees who won in the recent elections. She moved that the meeting be adjourned in the name of Paul Wagner.

• Clerk of the Board Marcia Milchiker acknowledged the wonderful work of classified employees. She congratulated Trustee Williams on his reelection, President Wagner on winning the Assembly primary, Trustee Lang on a great campaign for OC Treasurer, and Trustee Fuentes on election to the OC Republican Central Committee.

• Trustee Thomas A. Fuentes congratulated Trustee Williams on his reelection. He gave his condolences to President Wagner upon the passing of his son and wished him the best in the Assembly race ahead.

• Trustee William O. Jay called attention to the almost $550,000 in grants awarded this month to SC and thanked all the staff at both colleges who spend huge amounts of time writing grants.

• Trustee David B. Lang wished success to those trustees who won in the recent elections. He gave his condolences to President Wagner on the loss of his son. He acknowledged Deputy Chancellor Poertner who has given trustees such confidence in the finances of our district.

• Trustee John S. Williams mentioned that MySite received over 1.5 million hits and SmartSchedule over 1.2 million hits last month which underscores the relevance of our investment in technology. He congratulated President Wagner on winning the primary and Trustee Lang on his race for OC Treasurer. He thanked the people of Orange County for their support in reelecting him as OC Public Administrator-Public Guardian.

• Student Trustee Eve Shieh attended IVC's 25 anniversary event. She congratulated fellow trustees who won elections and gave condolences to President Wagner.

• Deputy Chancellor Gary Poertner discussed the 2010-11 tentative budget and reinforced that our district is very fortunate. Many K-12 districts are facing drastic budget reductions and community colleges around the state are reducing courses as much as six percent while we are about the same. He acknowledged the contributions of District Director of Fiscal Services Beth Mueller , SC Director of Fiscal Services Carol Hilton and IVC Director of Fiscal Services Davit Khachatryan.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: Foundation annual retreat; Dr. Don Busche serving as Acting Vice President for Instruction; Bart McHenry, new Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology; Professors Claire Cesareo-Silva and Rita Tamer being honored with the 2010 Blackboard Catalyst Awards for Individual Contributions in Staff Development; and negotiating with the Workforce Investment Board for a One-Stop center as a job finding resource for the community.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: 25th annual graduation ceremony with State Chancellor Jack Scott as commencement speaker; Dr. Elizabeth Cipres being named to the board of the Association of California Community College Administrators; over 300 attending the 25th anniversary celebration which included recognition of 2010 Medal Award Winners William M. Crosby, IVC Spanish Instructor Jeanne Egasse, and William T. Jenkins. 

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: attendance at the Economic Development Programs Advisory and Joint Regional Planning Committees in Sacramento; beginning the second annual Academic Foundation Summer Institute, a partnership with IVC and SC for a cohort of residents from the Orange County Rescue Mission's Village of Hope; and reviewing drafts of the research report from the Orange Orange County Business Council that will assist in strategic planning.   

ACTION, THE BOARD APPROVED . . .

• all consent calendar items and academic and classified personnel actions. If you wish to know specifics, please contact the Office of the President or Vice Chancellor, Human Resources. Of special note, the Board approved the appointment of Juan Avalos, Ph.D. as the new SC Vice President for Student Services and Dr. Don Busche as SC Acting Vice President for Instruction.

   

• accepting a $378,182 grant to SC for the Industry Driven Regional Collaborative, Health Information Technology Program from the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

• accepting a $169,487 grant to SC for the Enrollment Growth and Retention Program from the Board of Governors California Community College Chancellor's Office to support nursing and allied health programs.

• Fall 2010 SC and IVC community education courses, presenters and compensation.

• contracts of $672,675 for Blackboard Connect distance education infrastructure and Presidium Inc. help desk services. 

• contract for an estimated $400,000 with Xerox for purchase of copiers and related software.

• tentative 2010-11 budget for IVC Associated Students in the amount of $448,000.

• tentative 2010-11 budget for SC Associated Student Government in the amount of $861,121.

• district vision, mission, core values/guiding principles and strategic directions for 2010-13. Click here to view.

• contract with Neudesic LCC for $2,216,050 for the Sherpa Project and upgrades to MySite and SmartSchedule, and $891,840 for two years of maintenance of the Student Information System. 

• conducting public hearings to provide opportunities for the public to comment on the District's proposal to the SOCCCD Faculty Association, and the proposal from the SOCCCD Police Officers Association.

• two year, full time, temporary SC nursing faculty position paid through the Enrollment Growth and Retention Grant.

• The Board received an update on the status of the chancellor recruitment from Community College Search Services. 

• Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College provided drafts of their 2010 self study reports in support of reaffirmation of accreditation. 

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, July 4 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
