Special Recognition

Fumiko Ishii, Irvine Valley College Professor of Japanese Language & Culture, received a plaque from President Glenn Roquemore in recognition of her receiving the “Teachers Making a Difference” award at the Southern California Cherry Blossom Festival.

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the tentative 2009-10 budget for IVC Associated Students in the amount of $415,000.

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the tentative 2009-10 budget for SC Associated Student Government in the amount of $870,779.

• President Donald P. Wagner thanked IVC's Bill Hewitt, currently president of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, for inviting him to Sacramento to attend the consultation council meeting of the FACCC. He observed that colleges around the state are grappling with similar issues. He requested that the meeting be adjourned in memory of Charles Matheis, a supporter of IVC and husband of Foundation board member Mary Aileen Matheis. 

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes delivered the keynote address at the commencement of Pacific States University. Both he and Chancellor Mathur were awarded a Doctor of Business Administration Honoris Causa degree from the institution.

• Trustee William O. Jay complimented Deputy Chancellor Gary Poertner as well as Beth Mueller, Carol Hilton and Davit Khachatryan for a terrific job on the 2009-10 budget which is straight forward and transparent.

• Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey attended performances of ballet at IVC and Rockapella at SC.

• SC President Tod Burnett 's written report included mention of: 40th annual commencement; Early Advantage Partnership with Chapman University; Veterans Memorial donations topped $155,000; 2009 Orange Appeal journalism publication; anthropology and geology departments teamed up to offer a program in paleontology with Professor Renee Garcia teaching a summer class in fossil preparation; “Unconventional Summer Season” of professional guest artists; automotive technician instructors Darrell Deeter and Ken Welch were recognized at the California Automotive Teachers spring conference; and KSBR's 20th birthday bash.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: 24th annual commencement; women's badminton team completed an undefeated season and won the state title; Professor Daniel Luzko was present in Salta, Argentina when a Paraguayan dance company received first prize in a competition for which they performed to his piano composition; music student Raul Hernandez Vegan received a composition scholarship at Cal State Long Beach; Kids Kollege for grades K-11 is expected to draw 600 students; performances of Alice! held to benefit the dance department.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: summer enrollment is over 1,100 students, double the number from Summer 2008; meetings with UCI's School of Engineering, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton and Concordia University; possible relocation of the SC Rapid Tech program to ATEP; and a 20 student cohort from the Village of Hope attending the Academic Foundations Summer Institute, a pilot program of SC and IVC.

• 2009-10 tentative budget of $413.6 million.  The final budget is to be presented for Board consideration at the August 31 meeting. A presentation was made by Deputy Chancellor Poertner who acknowledged the contributions of District Director of Fiscal Services Beth Mueller, SC Director of Fiscal Services Carol Hilton and IVC Director of Fiscal Services Davit Khachatryan. • reallocation of $15,272,000 in basic aid funds from the SC New Sciences Building to the SC James Utt Library renovation to fund the state's portion of the construction and equipment phases. When state funding becomes available, the district will seek state reimbursement which would then be used to replenish the New Sciences Building project fund.

• reallocation of $2,700,000 in basic aid funds from the IVC Fine Arts Building to the BSTIC to fund the state's portion of the equipment phase. When state funding becomes available, the district will seek state reimbursement which would then be used to replenish the Fine Arts Building fund.

• agreement with HCTD, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Capital, LLC, to provide project development services for the ATEP project.

• order of priority for the five year construction plan to be submitted to the State Chancellor's Office.

• acceptance of a statewide leadership grant to IVC for $500,000 from the State Chancellor's Office for career development work-based learning linkages to professional organizations.

• increase of $5.00 to the existing approved fines for parking violations at SC.

• award of bid to Newbeginnings, Inc. for cafeteria operations at SC.

• execute an agreement with Pepsi for exclusive rights for the sale of soft drinks at SC.

• award of bid for $332,000 to TBC Contractors Corporation for SC new cafeteria flooring, admissions and records space renovations, and Health Sciences Room 206 renovation.

• The Board received an update on District information technology and a report on K-12 student registration. 

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, June 28 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
