• President Donald P. Wagner congratulated the colleges on their wonderful graduation ceremonies, particularly under the “weather induced” circumstances.

• Vice President John S. Williams attended many events this month including President McCullough's retirement celebration and commencements. He expressed appreciation to Tracy Daly for the classy, full page color advertisement in the Orange County Register congratulating the SC and IVC graduates.

• Trustee William O. Jay congratulated Hannah Lee and reinforced the important role of the student trustee. He will miss President McCullough -- “Dr. Saddleback”-- who has literally trained generations of nurses. He commented upon the extraordinary commencement ceremonies, and complimented both colleges which set up in the gymnasiums because of the rain.

• Trustee David B. Lang welcomed the new student trustee and congratulated Trustee Milchiker for her achievement as a member of the Class of 2008. He commended both college presidents and the faculty, administrators and staff on the terrific job they did on commencement and throughout the year. He talked about the fun and music at the KSBR Birthday Bash encouraged everyone to come out for the event next year.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker recognized John Ozurovich at SC and John Edwards at IVC for leading the efforts to move the commencement ceremonies from outside to inside. She was a graduate herself at the SC commencement this year, and mentioned that Carmenmara Hernandez Bravo handed her the diploma. She encouraged other baby boomers like herself to return to community college and pursue new worlds.

• Trustee Nancy M. Padberg attended the SC scholarship event and college graduation ceremonies. She congratulated John Ozurovich who moved the SC commencement from the football field to the basketball court. She congratulated President McCullough and wished him well in retirement. She attended the KSBR Birthday Bash and encouraged everyone to attend next year.

• Student Trustee Hannah H.E. Lee introduced herself and gave an overview of her background. She graduated from Irvine High School and is now a member of IVC's Phi Theta Kappa. She attended the IVC scholarship and commencement ceremonies.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur welcomed Student Trustee Hannah Lee and recognized the college presidents and college staffs who pulled together both indoor commencement ceremonies on short notice. He gave a report from a meeting of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force during which the featured speaker was OC Board of Supervisors Chair John Moorlach. He mentioned that Trustee Fuentes is recuperating at home and hopes to be at the next board meeting. He thanked Robert J. Kopecky for his service at ATEP, as he will now be a faculty member at IVC. He has been assigned the status of Provost Emeritus. He recognized PJ Schramel for his years of dedicated service in televising the monthly board meetings and wished him well in retirement.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: campus visit by the Bill & Flora Hewlett Foundation's Recognition of Promise Team; 39th commencement ceremony; ASG annual recognition banquet which honored Delores Irwin, Carmenmara Hernandez Bravo, Jack Hodges, Michael Long, Beau Arbuthnot, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, Lise Telson, Constance Kihyet, and Connie McClain; and the Lariat student newspaper was awarded First Place with Special Merit by the American Scholastic Press Association.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: Foundation awards dinner raised more than $30,000; the Model United Nations Team won an Honorable Mention Award at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City; the men's volleyball team captured the 2008 state volleyball championship for the second year in a row; 23rd commencement ceremony; Sammy Al-Shatti and Kathleen Settels were selected for the 2008 Phil Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team; and more than $189,000 in scholarships were awarded during 2007-08.

• ATEP report from President Roquemore included mention of: research and writing of the long range academic plan; current summer enrolment is at 300 students and growing; faculty orientation for summer; advertising and outreach campaigns for summer classes; fall schedule of classes to be included in the SC and IVC schedules; and re-branding effort to be incorporated in the class schedule, website and collateral materials.

APPROVED . . .

• all consent calendar items, academic personnel actions and classified personnel actions. If you wish to know specifics, please contact the Office of the President or Deputy Chancellor.

• a resolution to the Orange County Transportation Authority in support of transportation assistance for community college students.

• a resolution to be submitted to the Orange County Department of Education which consolidates the upcoming trustee election with other school district governing boards in the same district or area.

• acceptance for review and study district mission and vision statements for 2008-09.

• acceptance for review and study the five year construction plan from 2008-09 to 2012-13.

• acceptance for review and study the ATEP concept plan and long range plan, prior to submission of the plans to the City of Tustin.

• $4.15 million contract with Neudesic LLC for phase three of the student information system project.

• a contract not to exceed $135,000 with Public Economics, Inc. to perform consulting related services for redevelopment entitlement and ATEP related matters.

• a resolution authorizing the establishment of a retiree trust fund through the County Treasury and the transfer of funds for a beginning balance, in compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement 45.

• the 2008-09 SC and IVC child care monthly fee schedule.

• agreements to design and renovate the SC Gaucho Strength Center for the temporary relocation of the Communication Arts program for a total of $321,894.

• changing the board meeting dates to Tuesday, June 24 at 5pm and Friday, December 5 at 1:30pm.

• accepting a grant for $65,000 from the state chancellor's office to fund a technical feasibility study to determine if My Academic Plan (MAP) could be expanded into a state-wide system.

• Following an introduction by Dr. Don Busche, acting vice chancellor, technology and learning services, Dr. Rajen Vurdien and Dr. Craig Justice gave reports of the SC and IVC basic skills / student success initiatives. Click here for the presentation.
