• President Donald P. Wagner commended the SC men's basketball team on their accomplishment. As we enter the upcoming month of ceremonies, he offered congratulations to all the faculty and staff who have worked so hard to help students complete their education. He thanked President Burnett and the SC Foundation for the upcoming opportunity to recognize veterans at the dedication of the Veterans Memorial on Thursday, April 29.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg encouraged everyone to attend the SC Veterans Memorial dedication this Thursday.

• Clerk of the Board Marcia Milchiker mentioned how delightful it was to read the resolutions, particularly for Student Trustee Bailey and the SC basketball team.

• Trustee Thomas A. Fuentes stated that Deputy Chancellor Poertner and Chancellor Mathur will be enormously missed. He saluted both and acknowledged their teamwork in leadership of our district. He discussed a recent business trip as a board member of the Legal Services Corporation which included visits to Washington, D.C., Tucson, AZ and New Orleans.

• Trustee David B. Lang expressed appreciation to Chancellor Mathur and Deputy Chancellor Poertner for their leadership and contributions. He stated that Deputy Chancellor Poertner is one of the finest finance professionals he knows. He thanked President Burnett and the SC Foundation for their work on the Veterans Memorial. He congratulated the professors and classified staff of the year, and ATEP on the grant they secured from the State Chancellor's Office. He thanked Student Trustee Bailey for a terrific job this year.

• Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey introduced her parents who were in attendance and the new student trustee, IVC student Eve Shieh, who will be sworn in next month.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur thanked Student Trustee Bailey for her leadership and hard work in representing all the students of the district. He thanked Deputy Chancellor Poertner for his outstanding leadership and expressed appreciation for his wise input and counsel over the years.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: Veterans Memorial Dedication on Thursday, April 29; Sociology Speaker Forum featuring retired Judge Jim Gray who discussed drug policies; Earth Week activities; Nursing Director Rosalyn Downs receiving a national award for her video promoting nursing to minority groups; and the “No-F” academic probation campaign and an Alumni Association advertisement which won awards at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations national conference.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: music major Jessica Artinger being accepted to the 300th U.S. Army Reserves Band; IVC receiving the top honor at the 35th annual “Friends of Tustin Schools” Community Recognition Dinner; over 150 astronomy students providing visitors at the Irvine Spectrum with solar and lunar viewings; and students Jacqueline Jao and Eric Nolan receiving recognition on the floor of the State Senate and during a Community College League of California ceremony for their selection to the All-California Academic Team.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: receiving a $440,000 grant from the State Chancellor's Office to form an Industry Driven Regional Collaborative Center for Environmental Design and Compliance; district-wide input into planning documents for eventual presentation to the Board of Trustees; prospectus outlines being received from faculty for new programs and courses; and recruitment beginning for the second Academic Foundations Summer Institute.

• accepting the retirement of Deputy Chancellor Gary Poertner, effective July 1. He received a standing ovation at the meeting.

• resolution honoring Dr. Eddie Hernandez, retiring chancellor of the Rancho Santiago Community College District.

• resolution honoring Dr. Jo Ellen Chatham, Coastline Community College Foundation 2010 “Visionary of the Year.”

• IVC curriculum revisions for the 2010-11 academic year.

• agreement with McCarthy Building Company for construction management of the IVC Life Sciences Building for up to 910,000.

• award of bid for $12.2 million to Bayley Construction for the SC James B. Utt Memorial Learning Resources Center renovation, and an agreement with Joyce Inspections and Testing, Inc. for $256,824 to serve as the Division of State Architect inspector of record for the project.

• contract with Neudesic LLC for software development in the amount of $400,000.

• chancellor recruitment brochure, following discussion facilitated by Community College Search Services. The initial application deadline is in August with first level interviews in September.

Presentations-Reports-Public Hearing  

• The 20 year capital and scheduled maintenance needs of SOCCCD and possible funding mechanisms through 2031 were presented to the Board by Deputy Chancellor Poertner and Dante Gumucio of the firm Public Economics.  Click here to view the discussion chart.   

• A public hearing was conducted to provide an opportunity for comment on the SOCCCD Faculty Association's proposal.

• The Board received information reports on hiring of relatives and retirees receiving over $100,000 annually.

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, May 2 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
