Reports and Comments

 
  • President Donald P. Wagner congratulated SC on winning the men's state basketball championship and wished a speedy recovery to SC President Burnett.
  • Vice President Nancy M. Padberg was privileged to attend all but two of the exciting SC basketball playoff games. She mentioned that the IVC team also made the playoffs.
  • Trustee Thomas A. Fuentes congratulated SC for landing a $378,000 grant to develop a medical assisting program. He saluted President Burnett and team for the upcoming Veterans Memorial dedication event on April 29 at 4pm. He encouraged everyone to forward the invitation to veterans who have served our nation.
  • Trustee William O. Jay congratulated the coaches and players of the SC men's basketball team on winning the second state championship in the college's history.  
  • Trustee David B. Lang congratulated the SC men's basketball team and wished a speedy recovery to President Burnett.
  • Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey attended many events on the college campuses.
 
  • Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur discussed the enrollment growth in our district over the last three years which is up 25% in headcount and 20% in full time equivalent students. Our district hired 38 full time, tenure track faculty members in the 2008-09 academic year, 19 in 2009-10 and we expect to hire 26 for 2010-11. This is notable in the current climate of layoffs and furloughs in neighboring districts and state universities.
  • SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: potential for a wellness center on campus funded by Mission Hospital/St. Joseph Healthcare; Veterans Memorial dedication on Thursday, April 29th; donation of a Smart Car from Mercedes Benz of Laguna Niguel; over 800 potential students attending Senior Day activities; Apple Apeel employee gift campaign raising $26,500 for student scholarships; and Big Band Swing Thing dance party presented by the Angels for the Arts.
  • IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: Chinese/ Japanese Club's open house; Professor Stephen Rochford's appointment to the College Band Directors National Association Task Force; recent publication of a book by Professor of Music Darren Wilsey; Black History month celebration; reception hosted by Greenberg Traurig LLP for Astounding Inventions winners; upcoming 25th anniversary celebration on June 4; and over 1,000 potential students attending Senior Day activities. 
 
  • ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: continued input into strategic planning efforts; presentation at the annual ACCCA conference with our administrators and Hudson Capital CEO Victor Coleman; and first Development Forum with representation from ATEP, the colleges and district to involve faculty, deans and others in discussions of educational focus areas, space planning and architectural programming for ATEP's planned expansion.

  • retaining Community College Search Services as the hiring consultant firm in our district's search for a new chancellor, following interviews with five firms.
  • accepting a $551,724 grant to IVC from the California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCO) for Career Development Work-Based Learning Linkages to Professional Organizations.
  • accepting a $79,000 grant to SC from the for the CCCO Community Collaborative Grant.
  • agreement with R2A Architecture for $109,000 from basic aid funds for architectural services for the SC bridge replacement.
  • SC certificate and degree revisions for the 2010-11 academic year.
  • contract for independent auditing services to Macias, Gini & O'Connell in an amount not to exceed $122,556, $126,202 and $129,914, respectively, for fiscal years ending June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2012.
  • second and third year faculty contracts.
  • resolutions approving the elimination at SC of two categorically funded classified positions through layoff, due to the completion of the 2008-10 enrollment growth for nursing AA grant and termination of funding.
  • acceptance of the SOCCCD Faculty Association proposal for review and study, and set a public hearing on the proposal at the April board meeting.
  • nominations for the California Community College Trustees Association 2010 Board of Directors.
 
Viewing Board Meeting on TV and Online
 

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, April 4 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
