Special Recognition

The Board of Trustees presented a resolution to Dr. James Wright, Dean of the Division of Mathematics, Science & Engineering at Saddleback College, who was named by Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur as the 2009 Outstanding Administrator of the Year. 

The Board of Trustees presented a resolution to Jim Gaston, the Associate Director of Academic Systems and Special Projects of the District Information Technology Department, who was named by Chancellor Mathur as the 2009 Outstanding Manager of the Year. 

Saddleback College President Tod Burnett introduced 16 students from Egypt attending SC through the Egypt Community College Initiative Program.

• President Donald P. Wagner congratulated President Roquemore and the IVC Team on an outstanding dedication of the IVC Business Sciences Technology and Innovation Center (BSTIC). He congratulated SC Professor Larry Perez, the Orange County Community College Teacher of the Year, who was honored recently at the OC Department of Education event at the Disneyland Hotel. He recognized President Roquemore and IVC Foundation Chairman David Robinson for a successful Foundation event held recently at the Performing Arts Center.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes congratulated President Roquemore, Foundation Chairman David Robinson and the IVC team for their roles in producing the excellent IVC Foundation video (see link below). He gave a brief update on the October meeting of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force. He thanked President Roquemore and the IVC team for their gracious hospitality at the dedication and ribbon cutting for BSTIC.

• Trustee William O. Jay congratulated Jim Wright and mentioned that Jim served for 27 years in the U.S. Air Force, including many years at the Air Force Academy.

• Trustee David B. Lang said it was a pleasure to honor two of our best and brightest, Jim Gaston and Jim Wright. He shared concerns about the shrinking pool of basic aid funds to support long term capital infrastructure projects and suggested the Board conduct a focused discussion. He has also requested information from the colleges regarding articulation agreements for university transfer.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker congratulated Dr. Wright and Jim Gaston who are both extraordinary employees. She discussed the interesting form and function design of the BSTIC and recommended that everyone take a tour.

• Trustee Nancy M. Padberg congratulated Jim Wright and Jim Gaston. She attended the BSTIC ribbon cutting/dedication and an SC football game. She announced that Professor Perez donated $10,000 toward SC scholarships from his award as the OC Community College Teacher of the Year. She is working to line up donations for the SC Foundation Gala to be held on November 7.

• Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey attended SC Homecoming.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur said it was a pleasure to attend the OC Department of Education Teacher of the Year award program in which both Larry Perez and IVC Professor of the Year Martin McGrogan were honored. He mentioned that the BSTIC will be a wonderful learning center for students for many years to come. He and Trustees Milchiker, Padberg and Williams participated in fashion show sponsored by the Laguna Woods Village Republican Club.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: Emeritus Institute 10th Annual Fine & Decorative Arts Show; Red Ribbon Criminal Justice/Substance Abuse Career Fair with over 50 participating agencies; The Science Lecture Series sponsored by the biology and chemistry departments; new EReserve service at the library; Psi Beta National Honor Society in Psychology Chapter received a National Psi Beta Chapter Excellence Award; Campus Police's new mobile emergency operations center; and $65,000 in sponsorships and donations so far for the November 7th gala.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: Foundation received $12,000 from Coca-Cola Bottling Company; women's volleyball team participated in Dig Pink fundraiser for breast cancer research; the Orchestra and Wind Symphony performed in concert together; the marketing team won one silver and two gold medallions from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations; and the Master Chorale and Women's Chorus presented a concert of works from “Venetian Vespers.”

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: fall enrollment at 1,396 to date; meetings with faculty to facilitate program development for the ATEP expansion; tours of Sunset Gower Studios, as guests of Hudson Capital, and Laguna College of Arts and Design; analysis of industry needs and gaps being conducted with the Orange County Business Council and the Community College System Office's Centers for Excellence; and a comprehensive report of 2008-09 accomplishments.

• a contract up to $900,000 with Neudesic LLC for the Sherpa Project, a new aspect of the Student Information System, which will make recommendations to students of courses, services and information.

• announcement and recruitment of new and replacement faculty positions at SC and IVC for the 2010-11 academic year.

• resolution to approve the layoff of one part-time classified employee at ATEP.
